• ETHIOPIA / Ethiopian National Championships
Between May 6 and May 10 in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian National Championships were held. Based on his second double victory at the IAAF World XCC, Kenenisa Bekele was the favorite in the 5000 meters. But he was upset by Sileshi Sihine who claimed victories over both 25 and 12-1/2 laps. Runner-up at last November's Great Ethiopian Run, but then 7th behind Bekele at the WXCC in Lausanne, Sihine in Addis Ababa outkicked Gebre-egziabher Gebremariam over the opening day's (May 6) 10,000 meters. The IAAF Results Service reports Sihine's winning clocking of 28:24.80 in front of Gebremariam's 28:45.40, Dejene Berhanu's 28:52.10, and Mezgebu's 28:54.16 betters Assefa Mezgebu's 28:46.76 meet record set in 2000 by almost 22 seconds. In the final day's (May 10) 5000 meters Bekele looked promising at the bell. But over the last lap Sihine exploded to beat him, 13:35.30 to 13:47.25 in front of Markos Geneti's third in 13:55.70 and Berhanu's fourth in 14:01.80. World XCC long course titlist Worknesh Kidane comfortably handled the women's 10,000 meters field in 32:52.52, with Asha Gigi second in 33:39.14 and Ejigayehu Dibaba third in 33:56.81. The 5000 meters presented a clash between two world titlists, world junior cross champion Tirunesh Dibaba and world junior outdoor 5000/10,000 meters gold medalist Meseret Defar. Dibaba got the win in 16:01.48, with Defar second in 16:17.44 and Eyerusalem Kuma third in 16:20.46. Defar took the 3000 meters in 9:17.90, as well, with Etalem Kidane second in 9:22.60 and Sintayehu Ejigu third in 9:25.32. Reprinted with permission from "Running Stats" (www.runningstats.com)

• BRAZIL / Maratona BR de Revezamento: record field and controversy
The marathon relay "Maratona BR de Revezamento", held on May 18 in Rio de Janeiro, confirmed the success of this kind of race attracting more than 12,000 runners in the 2, 4, and 8 members teams. One of the reasons of this success is the friendly atmosphere among the teams that attracts people that are not used to take part in races. If the atmosphere among the recreational runners was friendly, the same couldn't be said about the competitive teams. The final result was polemical. The two first teams were disqualified because they used 7 runners in the 8 runners relay. Things were even more confused because the practice of having a runner doing two relay legs were allowed in the previous editions. It is suspect that the main reason to disqualification was that the organizers didn't want to pay the US$ 50.000 for the team that completed the marathon under two hours, team "Pão de Açúcar / BM&F / Mizuno", the first to complete the course, did it in 1:59.54. The team "Pão de Açúcar / BM&F / Mizuno" said he is going to prosecute the organizers. Source: www.copacabanarunners.net

• KENYA / A remarkable 5000 meters performance
On May 13 at high altitude in Kenya, World Junior XC silver medalist Boniface Kiprop (Uganda), still a high school student at Standard High, recorded a remarkable 5000 meters performance on a muddy Eldoret track. AllAfrica.com reports that as the eponymous longstanding stadium recordholder Kipchoge Keino watched from beside the track during the fifth Kenya Athletics Association / Eveready Trial, Kiprop sped to a 13:35.1 taking 20.5 seconds off Keino's mark.
