The history of nude running - In ancient Greece, athletic exercise played an important part of daily life: in fact, the Greeks credited several mythological figures with athletic accomplishments, and even male gods were commonly depicted as athletes. It is said that in the city-state of Sparta the custom of exercising naked was first introduced. Anyhow, it spread to the whole of Greece, and the athletes from all its parts, coming together for the Olympic Games and the other Panhellenic Games, competed naked in almost all disciplines, such as stadion and various other foot races.

Outdoor navigation tips - Hiking, and in particular hiking in remote areas, is a great experience if approached with due regard for fitness, safety and skill. One of the major skill categories, is the ability to navigate with or without compass and map. Ideally, no one should head off the beaten track without map or compass, but what if you find yourself in that situation, or you lose or damage your compass? Here are a few basic "skills" that could one day be of use.

WHERE TO RUN IN THE WORLD
Description of the month - Aleppo (Syria)
By Mohammad Shabarek - Running in Aleppo is related to time. I recommend you choose the path depending on the time you are intending to run or walk in. For example: if you choose early mornings I suggest you to go to the Sabil Park. There you will find many people running and walking in a big circle round the park, then you can have some exercise with a group of people at 9:00 am. Further more you can walk or jog in the evening in Al Shahba Al Jadeeda (Hirsh Street). You can also jog in Al Villat Street which is a long wide quiet street with low traffic. The public park is a very convenient place to jog throughout the day till 10 pm when the park closes.

RUN THE PLANET MAIL
While you were running did you ever have a question? Did you ever have an opinion about something and ask yourself "Is it just me?"? Did you ever come up with a great idea and wonder if you could just tell everyone the world would be a better place? Did you ever have a revelation and want to share it with others? Well now is your chance to address any one of these question, and basically anything else you come up with while you are running. To hear an opinion, or run an idea past someone. Visit the "Rtp Mail" webpage to receive an answer to your running related questions or to read an opinion about your running thoughts. Here are the last three question asked:
•Should I increase my blood volume before a race? - I understand that when we sweat, our blood volume decreases and less blood returns to our hearts to be re-oxygenated to fuel our muscles. I've read several articles about "blood doping" where elite athletes inject blood into their bodies before a race. Is this something that an average runner, like myself, who only wants to improve performance might consider? I don’t expect to win any races, and wouldn't want to "cheat", but what harm could I do by increasing my blood volume before a race? - Dopey
•How can I be noticeable while running in the dark? - With the days getting shorter up here in the northern hemisphere, I am forced to run at night. I live near a major city, and am concerned that automobile drivers won't be able to see me that well. What can I do to make my presence on the road more noticeable, for safety's sake, while I am running outside in the dark? - Night Runner
•How can I run a marathon to impress my new girlfriend? - I have only been running for a couple of months, but the girl I have been dating has asked me to run a marathon with her in two weeks. I have never run more than five miles and would appreciate your advice on how to best train for this race. I am not looking to win or anything crazy like that, but I do want to impress my new girlfriend. - Shorty Notice

The Underdog, by Joshua Davis, hardcover, 224 pages, Villard (2005), ISBN: 0345476581
Are we competition-obsessed? In a country that places extreme value on wealth, power, and physical ability, we all strive to be the best at something. But in reality, only a few are destined to be professional athletes, billionaires or rocket scientists, a reality that can leave the average Joe feeling inadequate. One such average Joe is Joshua Davis. Though young, Joshua has accumulated a lifetime of failures. In grade school, he electrocuted himself while trying to construct a fully operational replica of the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk in his bathtub. In high school, he started a rock band and at the first and only performance forgot the lyrics of the band's one song; the group disbanded. After college, Davis directed a feature-length film about a group of friends living in northern California; the movie was bought by a shady distribution company in Nicaragua to show it on local buses (the distributor however declared bankruptcy, never paid for film, and Joshua went to work at the phone company). But Joshua dreams like most guys. He wants a fun career, exciting adventures, a happy wife who's proud of him, and really big muscles that strangers can't help but admire. Too bad he is a 128-pound (58 kilograms) data entry clerk whose wife, Tara, has only three simple requests for their life together: direct sunlight, a dining room, and a bathtub. Since none of these exist in their small San Francisco apartment, Josh sets off on a quest to become the provider his wife wants him to be. The problem is that he does it in a way that most people in their right minds would never consider: he enters the most grueling and unusual contests in the world. In "The Underdog: How I Survived the World's Most Outlandish Competitions", what begins as a means to get Tara her bathtub evolves into a charming story of courage, adventure, and just a little bit of insanity. On the heels of a fourth-place finish (out of four contestants) in the lightweight division of the U.S. National Armwrestling Championships, Josh gets a spot on Team U.S.A. and travels to Poland to face "The Russian Ripper" in the World Championships – and Tara finds herself wishing her husband would go back to data entry. Unfortunately for her, he's just getting started. Over the next two years, Josh ventures to Spain to try his hand at bullfighting, sumo-wrestles 500-pound men, and bonds with his family at the Sauna World Championships because sometimes it takes a blistering 220-degree sauna to bring loved ones together. Joshua also perfects his backward running in India and at the Golden Shrimp "retrorunning" race in Italy, and a full chapter (over fifty pages, that is one fifth of the book) is dedicated to his uncommon running achievement. By turns hilarious, harrowing, and inspiring, "The Underdog" documents one man's ballsy attempt to live the American dream to the extreme - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price

If you have been focused on distance running in high school and are looking to move up to the collegiate level of competition than the video "Becoming a Champion Distance Runner: Advanced Techniques & Training" with Doug Brown, former University of Florida Head Coach, can be one more tool you can use to progress to the next phase of your development. Coach Brown presents his information standing in front of a white board with notes already prepared with several cut away shots of collegiate athletes performing the concepts. With over a dozen topics presented, you will be given insights include topics such as basic philosophy, running logs, two-a-day workouts, visualization, warm up/cool down, two week training cycle, sample workouts, circuit training, race strategy, males vs. females, nutrition, cross training, road racing, shoes, a word to the parents, and injuries. Sample workouts and circuit training take 21 minutes of this hour long presentation and is some of the strongest material presented. The use of longer intervals, shorter intervals, distance, slow/fast, and hills are placed into a two week cycle that is broken down day for day with many examples. The circuit training schedule includes 15 steps that is repeated for a workout that lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Owen Anderson from "Running Research News" has developed these drills that are used in lieu of weight training to aid the endurance and strength aspects of the athlete. Quotes from Coach Brown: "A warm-up and cool-down should be part of every serious distance runners’ daily regiment, especially when it comes to racing and interval workouts"; "I think in high school serious runners can get up to 70 to 80 miles a week when you are a junior or a senior and have been running for a couple of years or more"; "In a normal training cycle we go hard-easy-hard-easy. Your body needs to have a chance to recover and heal before you tear it down again because it is the tearing down and rebuilding process that’s going to make you better"; "Things the college coach is going to be looking at, number one is academics. No matter how fast you are, if you don’t qualify with the NCAA clearinghouse we can’t sign you". To order this 2002 release visit ChampionshipProductions.com and request a videotape. A brief sample clip can also be downloaded from the site in order to get an even greater understanding of what you will be seeing, yet what you will find is information that is solid, tested, and is sure to provide you a greater ability to reach your fullest potential as an athlete or coach.
PENGUIN INSPIRATION OF THE MONTH
Visit JohnBingham.com for more running pearls of wisdom from John "the Penguin" Bingham. Through his popular monthly column in Runner's World magazine, his breakthrough first book "The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life" and his best selling "No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running" the Penguin has inspired hundreds of thousands of men and women to run for fun, fitness, and self-affirmation.
Ready to rip - A good friend, when asked how he was feeling, was likely to say: "I feel like a tight pair of pants. I'm ready to rip". You may be feeling like a tight pair of pants. Your muscles are firm, and you are likely to be in the best shape of your life. This is the time to be cautious. If you have backed off your training you may be thinking that you have got more time to do other things. Don't be tempted to try to catch up with anything you have missed during training. There is nothing left to do but wait.
HOT SHOES / PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Originally a simple metal bracket, the "hot shoe" is also called "accessory shoe" and has nothing to do with running. It is indeed a simple and convenient way to attach the flash unit to the photographic camera: you only need to slide the mounting foot of the flash into the hot shoe. What a great name and what a lucky coincidence for us. When we decided to open this webpage dedicated to the best running images, we could not choose a more appropriate title for it.
