Hello Planeteers.

Days are longer and too beautiful to stay home and read electronic newsletter like this one. Yes, we could take it personally, but we won't. We are runners and we understand if you'd rather be outdoor, enjoying a nice quiet regenerating run under the Summer sun (that is for those of you above the Equator). For those of you below, you are probably ready for a nice brisk run. With this said, we will keep this newsletter short.

With the Williamsburg Area Running website joining the Run The Planet Satellites program this month, our worldwide running net continues to expand internationally. Let's welcome this Rtp-friendly website from Virginia into our big family.

Speaking of Satellites, great changes are about to hit the behind-the-scenes structure and usability of our Italian, Portuguese and Brazilian Run The Planet versions. We thought we would have been ready to introduce them here with rolling drums, but our programmer was too busy running around (literally: days have been gorgeous to run, lately) so it will be for the next month.

Let's keep our initial promise and quickly wrap this newsletter up. There is a nice Summer breeze moving the tree leaves outside our office, and we can't resist the call of the wild any longer.

Thank you as usual for being part of the Run The Planet community. Enjoy your next run.

Description of the month - Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia)
By Eric Seidlitz - Tun Fuad Park is located off of Jalan Lintas, about 20-30 minutes from the heart of Kota Kinabalu. The park consists of an asphalt track which encircles a lake. The track is about 1.4 miles around, and is a bit hilly. About halfway around, there are some steps heading up the hill there, which is actually quite tall. You could divert off the trail for 15-30 minutes before hitting the top of it, where you will be treated to a nice view of the city and the sea. There is a small "canteen" shop there, as well as a couple nice restaurants and several "kedai" - small eateries with a common seating area. No problem going there for a post-run meal all sweaty - many do it! Great run, good workout, and nice variation with the hill option. Have fun!

The Runner and the path, by Dean Ottati, hardcover, 269 pages, Breakaway Books (2002), ISBN: 1891369288

A young, talented corporate executive seeks meaning in life, beyond the regrets and excuses for the valuable things we all leave undone. Through running, he examines love, family, and the very fabric of life. This is "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" meets George Sheehan's "Running and Being". It is a book for anyone who feels the famine of meaning in everyday life, for anyone attempting to successfully balance work and family and a vibrant inner life. And it is a wonderful new look at the physical and emotional benefits of running. Dean Ottati feels that capitalism and competition have made us all poorer: slaves of the clock, pursuing the illusory and the empty. To find the substance of life, he runs. He runs on trails and roads and beaches, every day, alone or with friends, constantly challenging himself physically and intellectually. During these runs he re-evaluates his relationship to work, his use of time, his marriage, his bond with his young son. He peels back layers of hardness from his heart. He finds a new balance in the forces of family, work, love, solitude, money, happiness, and time. His conversation with running "mystic, sages, and philosophers" each become a chapter. The run along the beach with the friend who cousels him on marriage: "Would you rather be right or would you rather be happy?". The glorious muddy run in the rain with Marc, who declares: "Each wet sock is a stinking foot soldier in the war against postmodernism!". The run with Big Jack, a senior executive of his company, who teaches him "Before you speak, examine your intentions. If you can do that you will come to meet yourself, and it will transform you". And his runs lead him to the philosopher who says that merely by pondering the question of meaning in our lives, we begin to find meaning. Dean Ottati's quest takes him on a fascinating path toward a common-sense, workable enlightenment. His life becomes imbued with awareness, richness, and love that most of only dream about. And he teaches us, runners or non-runners, to find our own path. This is his first book, a book that can change your life - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price Rtp Newsletter archive • The Global Telegraph • Run The Planet
