Hello Planeteers,
There are a few things you can always count on, October always comes after September, and that the Run The Planet newsletter will bring you up-to-date on all the additions to your favorite running website,Run The Planet, of course.
Are you a vegetarian? Did you know that an athlete who consumes a poorly planned vegetarian diet may be at risk from nutritional deficiencies as well as poor physical performance? Visit "The vegetarian athlete", the new Dr. Planet article, and find out how to eat better, though once you do you may not use your poor eating habits as an excuse anymore why you are the last in a race.
If you are not a vegetarian, or even if you are, do you know which running and walking surface is best for you? Read "The ideal running and walking surface" article on Dr. Planet and compare the running surface choices and read the pros and cons. Once you discover the surface that makes you run really really fast, then you won't be last in the race.
Are you a trail runner or a road runner? If you are perplexed by this question when you are asked it at dinner parties you should take the "Trail Runner's Test", in our "Rtp Trails" section, so you can answer it with ease. Though one might assume there is some snobbery among the road runners towards the trail runners, it is surprisingly accepted to be a trail runner these days, not like in the 80's. But one thing is for sure, make sure you know which type of runner you are.
Are you from Canada? That doesn't really matter, the real question is if when you visit the Run The Planet webpage "World Crossroads", would you notice that there is a new street sign submitted for Canada. We should have a contest to see if anyone can guess. That would show us that there is at least one person out there that has visited every Run The Planet webpage, which means there is someone out there who really really really hates his/her job. Some of us at Run The Planet think this webpage is, well, whatever, and others at Run The Planet think it is an interesting way to show runners around the world what signs are created for them, and supposedly help them in crossing the street and not getting hit by a car. Obviously the latter members of Run The Planet think that you all are really stupid, and need such help.
Are you stupid? Actually, the real question is totally unrelated. Do you walk across fire? Did you know that Firewalking, next to prayer, is one of the oldest transformational tools the world has ever known. So for as long as the world has existed there have been people walking across fire. Quite interesting, read more about "The history of firewalking" on the Run The Planet "Running through History" webpage. Definitely not stupid, it is hard to believe that so many people would be doing something stupid for so long.
So there you have it. The October Run The Planet newsletter. And if you are a road running, vegetarian from Canada who needs help knowing when to cross the street to get to the firewalking session since Dr. Planet suggested that as the best running surface for you, one can only imagine how happy you are to get this newsletter.
For the rest of us, just thank us for giving you something interesting to read at work.
Keep those toes hot and keep running the planet.

Fall is definitely in the air. As the temperatures cool it seems like everyone's thoughts turn to marathons. I'm no exception and this month you can find me at the Portland, Akron, Chicago, Columbus, and Marine Corps Marathons. I'm also getting ready to run the "New York City Marathon" for the first time.
The good news is that the sport and activity of running keeps getting stronger. Paul Tergat just set a new world's record for the marathon, 2:04 and change. That's moving along pretty well. And, in just the few weekends in October, over 100,000 participants will complete a marathon.
With the summer months behind me, it's time to start looking back and the year that was and thinking about the year that will be. The release of "Marathoning for Mortals", and all the publicity that went with it, certainly kept me plenty busy. I lost count, but I can tell you that I've spoken to radio stations from Alaska to Washington, DC and everywhere in between.
Those of you who are joining me for the "P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and Half Marathon", I hope you're training is going well. The more I hear about the race and the course, the more I'm thinking that I'll have to run it. Knowing the gang at Elite Racing, it's going to be a fantastic event.
There's much more news to share, but it will have to wait until next month. In the meantime, enjoy the journey... it's all we've got.
Waddle on, friends...

Where to run in the world
Description of the month - Koloa (Usa/Hawaii)
By Kathy Sheehan - Starting at the Hyatt hotel near Poipu beach. This is a little bit rustic - almost a combination of hiking and running! Run North up the path to the cliffs (yes, I am serious!). Follow the paths North on the sand and red dirt staying as close as possible to the ocean. You have to be careful of the tree roots and rocks but the view are stunning! I fell once and discovered on the way back that it was in a religious site (a site for the fertility gods, I am told). At some point, you will have to get off the paths briefly and run on the Hyatt's golf course. About 2 miles into the run, I came across a ranch. There was a beach in the distance that I would have like to run to, but would have had to climb down a rocky ledge to get there. I wished I had more time to do it!

And it includes twenty-seven new first-marathon stories, as well as the stories of runners tackling their second or third marathon, and making the marathon an integral part of their lives. This 1998 instructional video lasts 33-minutes, was produced and directed by Doug Fink, with narration by Dan Simeone, and David Anderson acting as host. Other contributors include Dr. George Dintiman who is co-author of "Speed, Third Edition" and Bob Ward, former Dallas Cowboys strength coach and masters track and field competitor. If you have wondered if you could improve your speed, then the answer shown in this video is "Yes", as long as you are willing to do the work that is outlined. After a brief overview the next nine minutes presents the five methods of assessing speed in order to identify an athlete's strengths and weaknesses. The five tests are outlined and demonstrated with precision. The tests include the 120 yard dash, leg press, leg extension/leg curls, leg hops, and quick feet test. You will be provided parameters of scoring each test using ratios, percentages, comparisons and charts that outline specifics based upon gender and age. The main concept is to identify weaknesses to devote maximum time in specific drills to correct them while maintaining the identified strengths. Specific drills to improve speed based on the assessment are outlined in five categories of training. Strength and PowerSprint Drills takes up most of this section with footage of drills done on grass as well as the track with catchy names like butt kickers, wall slide, quick heel drill, inside/outside bounding, down and offs, pull throughs, ladder drill, African dance, and drum major. Details for how many intervals make each set and how many sets to perform are outlined as well as what drills can be performed during a warm-up period. Speed Endurance Training is sports specific and involves maximum effort for a short duration with complete recovery. Over the course of the season the distance will increase while the rest decreases. Sport Loading adds extra resistance to running. This can be completed with the addition of a weigh vest, using stadium stairs, weight sleds, and harnesses training. Overspeed Training includes the use of towing with surgical tubing, downhill sprinting, and high speed treadmill. The last two minutes provides tips on the best time to take the assessment and a schedule to implement the drills for maximum benefit. The off season preparations are contrasted with the in season training to maintain strengths and build optimal speed for a successful season. If you are looking for an edge for increasing your speed, and will follow up with the effort of completing the drills, then this instructional video is a must for your program. This video is available in both NTSC format for those in North America as well as PAL format for viewers in Europe and parts of Asia.
