Hello Planeteers! Welcome to the November issue of the newsletter.
The world is a little smaller this month and the running possibilities offered are multiplying. We welcome Eritrea and East Timor as new additions to the list of nations activated on Run The Planet. Now, the number of missing places to complete this virtual running globe, is down to less than a dozen nations. Mostly in Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Guinea, Western Sahara), but also one in Central America (Antigua & Barbuda) and two in Asia (Iraq and Syria). If anyone has visited any of these places and has a suggestion to share on where to run in such exotic locations, please send them in.
When the world gets smaller, the chance of meeting runners from other countries increases exponentially. This is why we felt the need to feature a new webpage containing "Race Etiquette for runners" so you can learn the universal rules of proper behavior, whether you are running at home or in a foreign country. One for all: "If you need to spit, move to the side of the road and do it there". This is actually one of the suggestions by Miss Road Manners who compiled this useful list of advices.
Another handy webpage, for those of you always traveling in search of new places to run, is the one dedicated to the "Herbal travel kit", containing an interesting article by Rob McCaleb, president of the Herb Research Foundation.
If chamomile tea won't help you relax, then you might be victim of a chronic case of "pre-race jitters". Is this intense fear common among runners? Read all about it in our "Rtp Mail" webpage and see how the mantra "It's only a race, and I'm only a goat. It's only a race, and I'm only a goat. It's only a race, and I'm only a goat..." could help you relax.
Also in our "Travel tips & tricks" webpage, check out the "Tips for the traveling runner" with suggestions you may find useful for athletic survival on your next trip.
Finally a long-awaited section has been inaugurated. It is the new "Paw The Planet" webpage, a specialized section dedicated to running with your dog, that in time will become a directory of articles, news, tips and information for all of you that love sharing a good run with your best friend.
That's all for now. It's only a newsletter, and we're only goats...
RTP Staff
October was quite a month, beginning with a return to Appleton, Wisconsin the birthplace of "the Penguin" character and ending with the "Marine Corps Marathon" which was where the Penguin Brigade first ran.
In between I walked in Ohio the "Columbus marathon" with a former elite athlete who is taking control of his life and getting back to his former self. Larry's personal marathon best is 2 hours, 48 minutes. We finished Columbus in 8 hours 43 minutes! Larry has lost 100 pounds, has another 100 to go, and is one of the most inspirational stories I have ever heard.
I'm taking most of the month of November off, to rest and recover from a long and very satisfying racing season. Since it started last April, I've completed 5 marathons, a couple of half marathons, two adventure races, and put in lots of miles promoting the new book "No Need for Speed". I'm listening to my own advice and relaxing for a while.
But... everything will be in full swing by December. I'll be in Honolulu and Huntsville, Alabama, before the holidays and then in Tucson and Orlando (at the "Walt Disney World marathon") in January. For more information on the schedule, check www.johnbingham.com
There are still a few openings for the 2003 running of the "Last Marathon" in Antarctica. There will not be a run in 2004 so if you're thinking about it, now is the time. See a slide show of my last trip at: www.waddleon.com/racelogs/antarctica2001/slideshow/index.shtml
I'll see you on the road. Waddle on, friends...

Where to run in the world
Description of the month - Dili (East Timor)
By Christoph - When visiting Dili you are most probably staying in one of the two hotel boats just opposite of the main government building. From there you follow the main road in western direction all the way to the huge Jesus statue that you already can see from Dili's center. It is a beautiful run on a winding road along the coast line. Approximately 7 kilometers long one way. Beware of wild dogs and pigs on the way and make sure you take something to drink with you to fight the heat.

On The Road - Where to run, eat & sleep in the world's favorite cities, by Doug Rennie, paperback, 144 pages, Rodale Press (2002), ISBN: 1579546471
Over the course of twentyfive years of running in new cities, Doug Rennie - "Runner's World" magazine's "On the Road" columnist - had found that his daily workout has been an amazing way to discover things about a town that conventional guidebooks never mention. He had learned that some "tourist magnets" do not live up to their hype, and he had stumbled across all kinds of cool little shops, galleries, mini-museums, pubs and bistrots not noted in the tour guides. You will be astonished at how much you can see on a run and this book is dedicated to runners that when traveling do not leave their sneakers at home. In this indispensable travel companion, Rennie offers inside tips travelling athletes crave: on the best hotels for runners to stay in, the must-run routes locals love, where to carboload, the best stores to visit if you need running gear, even the hottest local races. Rennie provides local knowledge on thirtysix destinations in North America, and on two of the most famous European capitals (Paris and London), all delivered in a style that has made his column a "Runner's World" favorite for a decade - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price
