WHERE TO RUN IN THE WORLD
Description of the month - Tirana (Albania)
By Steven Emanuels - Visiting Tirana? Come to the park and run. In the always crowded park of the city, you can safely run among many other runners, young, old, male and female. The park side offers hilly trails and asphalt stretches, winding through the trees, which gives good shadowing in the dry hot summers. You can clock your 5K round the lake (5340 meters, half road, half trail); or you can run a flat speedwork on the 600 meters dyke. Also you can run an uphill strength training to the orthodox church and brothers Frasheri; or finally you can go fartlek on the numerous trails. Under the amphitheatre is the welcoming clubhouse of the Tirana Running Club. If you plan to stay for some time in Tirana, join the club for a few dollars and you can use all facilities, but above all do it for the friendship! Bye and see you on the run.

RUN THE PLANET MAIL
While you were running did you ever have a question? Did you ever have an opinion about something and ask yourself "Is it just me?"? Did you ever come up with a great idea and wonder if you could just tell everyone the world would be a better place? Did you ever have a revelation and want to share it with others? Well now is your chance to address any one of these question, and basically anything else you come up with while you are running. To hear an opinion, or run an idea past someone. Visit the "Rtp Mail" webpage to receive an answer to your running related questions or to read an opinion about your running thoughts. Here are the last three question asked:
•How can I be noticeable while running in the dark? - With the days getting shorter up here in the northern hemisphere, I am forced to run at night. I live near a major city, and am concerned that automobile drivers won't be able to see me that well. What can I do to make my presence on the road more noticeable, for safety's sake, while I am running outside in the dark? - Night Runner
•How can I run a marathon to impress my new girlfriend? - I have only been running for a couple of months, but the girl I have been dating has asked me to run a marathon with her in two weeks. I have never run more than five miles and would appreciate your advice on how to best train for this race. I am not looking to win or anything crazy like that, but I do want to impress my new girlfriend. - Shorty Notice
•What is it about the marathon that is so special? - Lately I have been thinking about training for and running a marathon. When I have mentioned it to my friends, I find that they are pretty impressed that I am even considering it. What is it about the marathon that is so special? Why are so many people awed by the thought that I might run such a road race? What is this mystique all about? - International Marathoner of Mystery

Running in the Zone, by Steve King and Dan Cumming, paperback, 227 pages, Trafford (2005), ISBN: 1412068576
Imagine yourself running a marathon! Now imagine doing it in 2:47:02 - yes two hours, forty-seven minutes and two seconds. Now imagine you are 64! Too far? Too fast? Too old? Maybe, but that is exactly what one of the twenty-six contributors to "Running in the Zone" did. If that is too hard to imagine, then what about getting yourself ready for a walk/run program to do your local fun or charity event? More manageable? That too, is in "Running in the Zone", along with instructions on meditating while you run. Something for everyone is what the editors tried to build into this new book. That is exactly what they did according to Jeff Galloway, former Olympian and author of the best selling "Galloway's Book on Running": "This is a book that is designed for the older runner. The authors are not only experts in their fields, they have dealt with the issues themselves. You'll find a lot of information on a wide range of issues". The twenty-six contributors, men and women, average just over 61 years of age (ranging from 46 to 76) and collectively have run well over 1250 marathons, not counting many ultramarathons. Some have overcome physical challenges such as cancer. Others are present day age-class regional, national and even world record holders. There are several Olympians and world record holders among the contributors, but there are many who simply love running. While the contributors have run virtually every distance up to ultramarathons, most have done the marathon. The fastest was a men's masters performance of 2:18 and the fastest from the women writers was 2:29. But, one of the bests was near five hours - and a best it was, considering the circumstances. The book was developed by Steve King (runner, triathlete and race commentator, well known for his race day announcing at "Ironman Canada", the "Vancouver Marathon", "Royal Victoria Marathon", "Vancouver SunRun" and as on-air commentator for event coverage by national and international television networks) and by Dan Cumming (average but avid runner, race director and author with many years experience in writing, editing and publishing). "Running in the Zone" is for all runners, but particularly those that feel they are now, or soon will be, among the "seasoned" athletes. It is also for those thinking maybe they would like to start running even though they are 40 or 50 years of age. Many of the writers, including the one in the opening lines, didn't start running until they hit their fourtieth birthday and beyond. "Running in the Zone" is inspirational and instructional. Even among the most elite of the contributors, the most common reason for continuing to run distils down to: "because I love it". "Running in the Zone" shows there is little to stop a person from enjoying this wonderful sport and being active as a competitor, non-competitive practitioner, coach and volunteer, for as long as a person has the will to do so - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price

"Runervals 3.0 Cheetah Fast!" with coach Troy Jacobson is one of a series of five treadmill workouts to help you get the most out of your indoor running. It is evident that coach Troy has been meeting the needs of athletes, after being a professional triathlete himself, for well over a decade. In this interval session you will be led through speed and strength work consisting of tempo running, two pyramid sets, and building repetitions. Like most of the workouts in this series, the difficulty rating is appropriately ranked a "9" on the 1-10 scale. After a short warm-up (you may want to do a bit more on your own) you jump right into the work with four other very fit runners that include: Amanda Gillam, triathlete and personal trainer; Greg Cunningham, triathlete and triathlon academy coach; Joanna Zeiger, U.S. Olympic triathlete; and Kristen Till, sales rep and runner. Like all Runerval workouts, in the lower right hand corner of the screen is where you will see the current speed and percent incline of the treadmill (changes from an established base pace). In the lower left hand corner you will see the remaining time left in the workout. In the upper left corner you will see a perceived effort bar graph from 60% to 100% that adjusts as the tempo and exertion change between sets. Perceived effort can be noted even more if you have a heart rate monitor in use during these sessions. All these cues may sound like a lot of information on the screen, yet each element is helpful and keeps you on track as the workout progresses. Coach Troy gives ample cues so you know what to expect and prompts you to "roll into" each change as the music shifts tempo to match your running intensity. Be sure to have a water bottle and towel available as the sweat will be pouring as you go through these sets. If you are driven, success oriented, and want to put in some hard work to reach your goals, then take to your treadmill (or elliptical) and let this DVD, and others in this series, lead the way. To place an order, and start becoming more focused in your treadmill workouts, visit Spinervals.com where for a short time the VHS versions of the first three in the series are half price. In closing Coach Troy states: "Thank you for joining me in this Runervals treadmill workout: doing this type of interval session once or twice each week as part of your normal training schedule will do wonders for your strength and speed in preparing you for the 5k, 10k, and even the marathon". Brief notes on each workout in this series: 1.0 (for the beginner, including 12x1 minute intervals), 2.0 (tempo running with 4 sets of various intensity running), 3.0 (two sets of Pyramid repeats to build speed and strength), 4.0 (15x hill repeats with increasing speed and elevation), and 5.0 (5x1 mile repeats with short rest in improve lactate threshold).

The Joy of Running Together, by David Govedare, Riverfront Park, Spokane (Usa/Washington)
"To run with so many people you lose your sense of how well or poorly you run. You're just part of the flow, the sound of footsteps and breathing. You're continuously aware you're really not competing with anyone. You're sharing something" said sculptor David Govedare, a Chewelah artist who sculpted the 40-runner scene along Spokane Falls Boulevard in 1985. The sculpture was inspired by the yearly scene of runners who flock to Spokane for what is declared the largest road race in the world, the "Bloomsday Run". The race is held the first Sunday in May ever since the first "Bloomsday Run" in 1977. The course is 12 kilometers or 7.46 miles. It starts in downtown Spokane and heads northwest along the far west end then passes by Mukogowa Ft. Wright and Spokane Falls Community College before heading up Doomsday Hill and back downtown to the County Courthouse.
PENGUIN INSPIRATION OF THE MONTH
Visit JohnBingham.com for more running pearls of wisdom from John "the Penguin" Bingham. Through his popular monthly column in Runner's World magazine, his breakthrough first book "The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life" and his best selling "No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running" the Penguin has inspired hundreds of thousands of men and women to run for fun, fitness, and self-affirmation.
Get ready to party - In the old days, races were like final exams. You prepared during the training season and then let it all hang out on race day. Those days are gone forever. These days the races are the celebration of what you have achieved. You will stand at the starting line with 30,000 of your closest friends and run and walk through a great city, around a historic track, and return to a heroes welcome. The final step across the finish line makes it all worthwhile.
HOT SHOES / PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Originally a simple metal bracket, the "hot shoe" is also called "accessory shoe" and has nothing to do with running. It is indeed a simple and convenient way to attach the flash unit to the photographic camera: you only need to slide the mounting foot of the flash into the hot shoe. What a great name and what a lucky coincidence for us. When we decided to open this webpage dedicated to the best running images, we could not choose a more appropriate title for it.
