RUN SHOP SMILE - Visit "The Mall",Run The Planet's shopping center & link resource
We have chosen stores with the runner in mind. Internet retailers equipped to offer you products to either help you run better, or look better while you run. After all, since when was running just between feet and the road? Shop and enjoy.
The importance of shoelaces - People often underestimate the importance of shoelaces in footwear. In theory, shoelaces are an elegantly simple device needing no further thought than pulling them tight and tying a shoelace knot. In practice, there is a whole lot more to shoelaces, especially for active people that depend heavily on their footwear. The type of shoelaces, the way they are laced and the shoelace knot technique all have a bearing on the resulting comfort and reliability.
Be selfish, invest in your family - The more time you invest in your family the better chance you have in creating the type of family that you have envisioned. With life there are no garantees, but if you can enjoy the time spent staying in good health, see some realistic short term gains, and build a strong family structure then the long term vision of having a successfull family should take care of itself. A happier family always makes a happier runner.
Feeling lucky of being a runner - Amused by the picture of a runner and the text "Paris Tokyo en courant", I stop to question! It happens to be the caravan of Serge Girard, ultramarathoner on his way to Tokyo, just passing Albania. Although I haven't run in months, my sporter's heart tells me to act, show some hospitality and mark this passage of a fairly unknown, but incredible solitary runner. Sunny Sunday morning 8 o'clock, day 43 for Serge. I have gathered five runners from the Runners Club Tirana and Telesport Television to make it an event.
RUN THE PLANET IN THE NEWS
Run The Planet has been mentioned in the article "Getting ship shape; Taking a cruise doesn't mean that exercise plans won't work out. Having the cake and the walk can be a cakewalk. You should even have time for some yoga" by Jeanne A. Leblanc, published in the Travel section of "The South Florida Sun-Sentinel", on 19 June 2005.

WHERE TO RUN IN THE WORLD
Description of the month - St Petersburg (Russia)
By Derek - St Petersburg is, on its day, the most beautiful city in the world. But it also suffers from bad pollution, terrible traffic, and some poor running surfaces. In the winter, it can be unrunnable, with a mix of snow and black ice making it particularly hazardous. Best routes are along the river, where you can run miles of granite on either side, cruising past the Hermitage (Winter Palace), the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Cruiser Aurora (which fired the cannon to signal the start of the Revolution), and so on. My favourite short route is a loop from the Admiralty, to Dvortsovaia ploshad' (Palace Square), across the Neva onto the Strelka, across the Malaya Neva onto the Petrograd Side, past the Peter and Paul Fortress, back across Troitskii most, and down the embankment back to Dvortsovaia and the Admiralty. That would be about 5.5 kilometers. For longer routes, you can take a more distant bridge back, or explore some of the more northerly islands. Krestovskii island's Primorskii Park Pobedi (seaside Victory Park) is large and good for running. From the centre of town up to Krestovskii is about 8 kilometers. The other Victory Park, south of the centre on Moskovskii prospect, is also a decent destination. From the centre of town, it is a heavily-polluted direct 6 kilometers or so down to the park. Riverside is best to avoid the pollution. A loop of the whole of Vasilievskii island is about 10 kilometers. Warning: few people run in this city, and a lot of people will think you are a weirdo.

HOT SHOES / PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Originally a simple metal bracket, the "hot shoe" is also called "accessory shoe" and has nothing to do with running. It is indeed a simple and convenient way to attach the flash unit to the photographic camera: you only need to slide the mounting foot of the flash into the hot shoe. What a great name and what a lucky coincidence for us. When we decided to open this webpage dedicated to the best running images, we could not choose a more appropriate title for it.

RUN THE PLANET MAIL
While you were running did you ever have a question? Did you ever have an opinion about something and ask yourself "Is it just me?"? Did you ever come up with a great idea and wonder if you could just tell everyone the world would be a better place? Did you ever have a revelation and want to share it with others? Well now is your chance to address any one of these question, and basically anything else you come up with while you are running. To hear an opinion, or run an idea past someone. Visit the "Rtp Mail" webpage to receive an answer to your running related questions or to read an opinion about your running thoughts. Here are the last three question asked:
•How can I be noticeable while running in the dark? - With the days getting shorter up here in the northern hemisphere, I am forced to run at night. I live near a major city, and am concerned that automobile drivers won't be able to see me that well. What can I do to make my presence on the road more noticeable, for safety's sake, while I am running outside in the dark? - Night Runner
•How can I run a marathon to impress my new girlfriend? - I have only been running for a couple of months, but the girl I have been dating has asked me to run a marathon with her in two weeks. I have never run more than five miles and would appreciate your advice on how to best train for this race. I am not looking to win or anything crazy like that, but I do want to impress my new girlfriend. - Shorty Notice
•What is it about the marathon that is so special? - Lately I have been thinking about training for and running a marathon. When I have mentioned it to my friends, I find that they are pretty impressed that I am even considering it. What is it about the marathon that is so special? Why are so many people awed by the thought that I might run such a road race? What is this mystique all about? - International Marathoner of Mystery

Winning State - Track & Field, by Steve Knight, paperback, 156 pages, Let's Win! Publishing (2005), ISBN: 0976536196
Experience the power of believing. When the pressure is on your heart pounds, your stomach knots, you can't focus, and you doubt yourself. What do you do? If you crash and burn, it is time to learn how to believe in yourself. "Winning State - Track & Field", an athlete's guide to competitive confidence, is written for all ages and events. It provides critical mental skills athletes need to believe in themselves, when it is all-on-the-line. The book includes Demon Slayer visualization tecniques, core confidence routines, and go-time composure skills. Author Steve Knights, four times State and two times National powerlifting champion, is a pioneer in the field of mental preparation for tournament competitions. His straightforward, pull-no-punches delivery, combined with a "Been there, done that" perspective, sheds new light on the important topic of competitive confidence. His teachings revolve around a simple premise: confidence is a skill for all to learn, not a genetic gift only a few possess. "Within these chapters athletes learn how to focus their minds on believing in their physical abilities; they learn how to successfully battle the natural up-and-downs of insecurity and self-doubt; ultimately, they learn how to perform under pressure" - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price

"The ultimate sprint, hurdle, relay and conditioning video" is an all encompassing instructional video that will be a prized possession of any youth, club, or high school track and field program. Coach Bryan Hoddle (2004 Head Coach, Usa Paralympic Track & Field Team) is joined by five award winning athletes who demonstrate the various skills as they are being outlined. The group is made up of decathletes Gabe Garrett and Doug Sells, sprinter Brian Parris, and two female sprinters/long jumpers Razi Mason and Lakeesha Cockrell. Each section of the video progressively builds on the last with a host of topics that include goal setting, nutrition, mechanical principles, warm-up, active mobility drills, hurdle tips, testing protocol, sprint training, baton drills, medicine ball work, exercise ball, block work, sprint problems and solutions, and warm-down. Two of the most often overlooked parts of a workout, the warm up and warm down, encompass about 30 minutes of this production. Thirty-seven warm up drills are demonstrated (dynamic active, wall dynamic activity, and active mobility drills with hurdles) and 20 warm down activities are shown and explained. By incorporating these drills into the daily workout routine, common injuries, like shin splints, can often be prevented. There is also performance benefits by increasing joint range of motions in the hip area that can best be achieved doing isolated activity found in these drills. The drills presented are safe, effective, and can be used with athletes of all ages and ability level including the five baton drills, 12 medicine ball activities and 11 tasks with the oversized exercise ball. Quotes from coach Hoddle: "Today I’ll be telling you not only the ‘whats’, but I’ll be telling you a lot of the ‘whys’; remember, today kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care"; "The rear block is usually at a steeper angle than the front block in order to present a surface that is perpendicular to the direction of the force application... You need to be thinking about the first movement, not the gun"; "We emphasize post-stretching at the end of practice to relax the body and shut down the central nervous system; again, some of the benefits are prevention of injury, promotion of circulation, and increased range of motion"; "I hope you find this tape informative; I hope that some of the drills and techniques that we’ve used, you’ll be able to fit into your program". By bringing coach Hoddle’s vast experience of coaching speed events into your workouts, you are sure to watch your athletes progress and improve as they enjoy their sprint workouts to a whole new level.
