WE GIVE YOU SOMETHING GOOD TO READ

Hello Planeteers.

Let's start with the kind of news that always makes us want to run a bit faster and a bit further. This month Run The Planet welcomes runners visiting us for the first time from Eritrea. Named after the Latin name for the Red Sea, Mare Erythraeum, this is a country bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti and the Red Sea. Much of Eritrea is mountainous, so great for those runners looking for challenges, especially considering that - if you take away the mountains - its narrow coastal plain is one of the hottest and driest places in the African continent. Nonetheless there are runners in Eritrea, as our statistics highlighted this month. And we are proud to be here for them too.

What brought runners from Eritrea to Run The Planet? Hey, we do not brand ourselves as "the largest worldwide running community on the Internet" for no reason. Since we started in 1996 we have been visited by runners from 172 different nations, with a current monthly average of 116 different nations. Mostly, this success is because every day you make this website the place where running-related information is shared with other runners like you. We will never get tired to thank you all for your continuous support and contribution.

On our side, we sacrifice some running to sit in front of our computers and improve our content for you on a daily basis. This month we are proud to feature the complete version of the 1937 book How to excel at games & athletics by A. M. Saldo, previously published on paper, and now available free of charge in electronic format in our Planet Library section. The Safety on the run collection of articles now lists tips on what to do if Running into a black bear; while Tips for returning to exercise after you have a baby can be found among the Run Her Planet library.

Also new this month: the article The inner athlete in our Spiritual running webpage, including four enlightening talks about running by Sri Chinmoy, a spiritual teacher who is trying to inspire and serve mankind with his soulful offerings; a compendium of Track etiquette for athletes to promote an enjoyable race experience for everyone; and a checklist with the Top 5 hydration mistakes in our Dr. Planet section.

Finally check out tips on traveling with your family to the race and dealing with race day family boredom in the Traveling with the family article; and two fashinating researches on footwear: The history of the athletic sandals and The history of the athletic shoes both available either from our Rtp Shoes or from our Running through history webpages.

Now go, go run. Enjoy your workout and thanks again for being part of our worldwide running community.

RUN AGAINST TERRORISM
On September 18, 2005 participate to the seventh annual edition of the "Trofeo Drs Italia" running against terrorism. It is a virtual fun run with simultaneous official start at 9 in the morning (Italian time). Staggered starts in the different countries of the world according to each time zone. The distance to cover has been estabilished in 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Because this is a virtual race, each participant can run anywhere in the world. The final results will consider valid any time obtained on training courses or within other running events (even if longer than 10 kilometers) as long as the participant is running on the official date of the event. The event can be ran on any terrain (asphalt, dirt road, track). Each participant can run alone or with other runners, even if the other runner do not belong to the Dead Runners Society. This edition welcomes the participation of runners not belonging to the Dead Runners Society.

WHERE TO RUN IN THE WORLD

Description of the month - Nice (France)
By Peter Karlsson - I recently spent a week in Nice, France. While running along the Promenade Anglais is enjoyable, I find it a bit too crowded to be really enjoyable. If you want to have a truly spectacular run, start (at Place Massena) on the Promenade and run east towards the harbor. When you reach the harbor, follow the parking lot around it. Once you reach the restaurants exit left up on of the side streets, then take an immediate right, water will be on your right. Continue running up the long and sometimes steep hill that goes right along the coast. It is tough but the view is great!!! As you reach the crest of the hill after approximately 3 kilometers you will be running through a nice residential area and heading towards Villefranche which is the next village. The view coming down the hill into Villefranche is unbelieveable, a small bay littered with yachts, the village in front of you, and Cap Ferrat just on the opposite side. Even better is that you also see across Cap Ferrat with Monaco in the background... Coming into Villefranche is all downhill, as you get down to the little park downtown where you can turn right to go out to Cap Ferrat you will have run approximately 7 kilometers from the start. If you go out to the edge of Cap Ferrat you will add another 5-6 kilometers to your run depending on what roads you run. One of the best places I can think of for a 20-35 kilometers long run. Plenty of marathoners along these roads!

RUN THE PLANET MAIL

While you were running did you ever have a question? Did you ever have an opinion about something and ask yourself "Is it just me?"? Did you ever come up with a great idea and wonder if you could just tell everyone the world would be a better place? Did you ever have a revelation and want to share it with others? Well now is your chance to address any one of these question, and basically anything else you come up with while you are running. To hear an opinion, or run an idea past someone. Visit the "Rtp Mail" webpage to receive an answer to your running related questions or to read an opinion about your running thoughts. Here are the last three question asked:

What should I look for in a "racing watch"? - What should I look for in a "racing watch"? I see so many runners, at road races, with high-tech, slick looking wrist watches, and am interested in purchasing one. What are the benefits of running with a time-piece? - Timely Questioner

What is the proper way to hydrate? - When I run half and full marathons, I get so dehydrated that I run out of energy near the end, and my leg muscles cramp up. I have tried drinking sports drinks and all of the recommended fluids to prevent dehydration, but I just can't seem to overcome the problem. What is the proper way to hydrate before and during a long run? - Dripping Dry

Should I avoid city running all together? - I run five miles every day through the streets of a major metropolitan city. I find that much of my time is spent dodging automobile traffic, and waiting for the lights to change. How can I remain safe from an accident, while at the same time maintaining my running pace and good form? Should I avoid city running all together? - Downtown Trodder

Continental Quest, by Fred McBee and Jack Ballinger, paperback, 216 pages, Overland Press (1984), ISBN: 0930479009

The "Continental Quest" is a great inspirational book about the first wheelchair crossing of North America, co-written by Fred McBee and Jack Ballinger. This raucous, rousing true-life adventure of two wheelchair athletes muscling their way across the great expanse of America, was written while the memories were emotionally chaste. It is an honest, if sometimes unflattering, portrayal of the athletes' achievement, what they did and how they felt about it, on their way from Los Angeles to New York City. Barry Corbet, editor of the "New Mobility" magazine, welcomed the book as "an American classic - one of the great disability adventures", and today - more than two decades from when the event took place - what we read is still an epic story of high adventure. "Written into the text of this classic work, and inscribed between the lines, is a manly gut-wrenching courage portrayed with a macho gut-busting humor" says William Harrison, author of "Rollerball" and "Mountains of the Moon". "The fact that it is true, and that it is about guys in wheelchairs, tells us that we live in a world without limits or excuses" adds Jim Morris, author of "War Story" and "Operation Dumbo Drop". If the book had inspired generation of athletes, after its publication it also inspired Dick Bernard to put together a committee that raised million of dollars to make the Statue of Liberty wheelchair accessible. He blamed this on the "Continental Quest" recounting a story from the expedition: "When we got to New York City, Bernard asked us if there was something special we would like to see. 'Lady Liberty!', the team chorused. 'Sorry', Bernard had to tell us. 'It is not accessible'. Everyone appreciated the irony. We had just crossed a continent, conquered mountains and prairies, but we couldn't climb the stairs at the foot of the statue". Bernard says that moment inspired him to form his committee for making the Statue of Liberty a monument truly accessible to all the people in the world. Author Fred McBee, as a journalist, covered the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first time that wheelchair racing was included in the Olympiads (the men's 1500 meters and the women's 800 meters were chosen as demonstration events by the International Olympic Committee). Former English teacher at the University of South Florida, Fred McBee retired from teaching to concentrate on international travel and disabled issues. Co-author Jack Ballinger is twice captain. He runs the fire boat for the Tampa Fire Department (occasionally you'll see him on the evening news, standing on the deck of a burning tanker, silhouetted against a wall of flame). He is also a certified charter captain, operating his own fishing/dive boat - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price

Inspiration comes from various angles in this motion picture documentary titled "Racing against the clock". Writer, producer, and director Bill Haney of Uncommon Productions introduces viewers to five women, ranging in age from 50 to 82, who have their sights set on representing the United States in the Masters World Championship. Their athletic accomplishments are many; however, it is the way they have lived their lives to make the athletics possible that is the truly amazing aspect of these unique stories. The five featured athletes are: Margaret Hinton (former cow-girl and current nursing home resident; "When I was in high school girls were not allowed to play outside activities: we crossed our ankles, pulled our dresses below our knees, and kept our mouth shut"), Leonore McDaniels (political refugee; "Athletics has increased my self-confidence tremendously: we never had rewards"), Jacqueline Board (single mother and sharecropper’s daughter; "Running let me think clearer, it gave me the ability to find the strength to go further, to do better; it made my will stronger"), Pat Peterson (three-time cancer survivor; "Knowing that all your friends are running in a world competition, and I’m lying in a hospital bed half dead, that gave me more incentive to get healthy"), and Phil Raschker (oldest athlete to be a finalist for the Sullivan Award for top amateur athletes; "If I’m healthy and trained I don’t have any competition in the U.S. so going to the Worlds for me is the ultimate; that’s what I train for; that’s what I live for"). The 80-minute film includes footage from three primary venues, all shot during the spring of 2003. The first stop is during the National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston (Usa/Massachusetts), where late Everett Hosack, then age 101, is also seen competing in the sprints. Next is the Senior Olympic National Championships, held in Norfolk (Usa/Virginia), where 30,000 people qualified by placing first or second in their state competitions. This event is just weeks before the Masters World Championships and is used to select the team to represent the United States. Finally, they are off to the 2003 Masters World Championships in Puerto Rico, a competition featuring 2,700 contestants from 78 different countries. If you want to see a spectacular demonstration of pure athleticism and triumph over adversity, then this is one film you will want to add to your running movie collection. Your soul will fill with inspiration and delight. To read more about this production, as well as place an order, visit the official site RacingAgainstTheClock.com. While there you can also view a trailer, read press comments, and view their numerous film festival appearances.

"Dromeas II", by Costas Varotsos, Hilton square, Athens (Greece)

"Dromeas II" ("Runner II") was created by Greek artist Costas Varotsos and completed in 1994. It has also been called "Marathon Runner" or "Glass Runner" in some circles as many can relate to the movement the piece invokes. This very interesting statue is made of stacked plates of glass and is prominently displayed in the Hilton square, located at the end of Vassilissis Sofias Avenue. Varotsos works primarily in glass and steel, materials he transforms into works of art that ignite the imagination. Varotsos' sculptures interact with and explore the specific sites they occupy as seen with this piece. Costas Varotsos was born in Athens, Greece in 1955. He studied fine arts and architecture in Italy. With studios in Greece and Italy he has successfully exhibited in galleries around the world for over twenty years. In 1999 he was appointed professor for Fine Arts at the University for Architecture in Thessaloniki (Greece). He has displayed his work in one-artist exhibitions since 1978 and he has had his sculptures selected to appear at the Venice Biennale. For the 1999 Venice-based celebration, his country selected him as their sole representative, and his work fills Greece's entire pavilion.

PENGUIN INSPIRATION OF THE MONTH

Visit JohnBingham.com for more running pearls of wisdom from John "the Penguin" Bingham. Through his popular monthly column in Runner's World magazine, his breakthrough first book "The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life" and his best selling "No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running" the Penguin has inspired hundreds of thousands of men and women to run for fun, fitness, and self-affirmation.

Climbing the mountain - Robert Pirsig wrote that mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible. The goal is to find the equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Training for a long distance event is the same. As your long workouts get longer you want to be careful not to work too hard. But you also want to be careful not to cheat yourself. Find that point of equilibrium. Find that point where the effort is honest and no more. Find that point on every long workout. If you do, your training - like mountain climbing - will seem effortless.
