WE GIVE YOU SOMETHING GOOD TO READ
Hello Planeteers,
The end of the year is rapidly approaching and we are dedicated to complete the running map of the whole planet before January 2005. This is our goal and we are running fast to reach such an important finish line. We won't stop running after that, do not worry, but at least we will approach the next run with a renewed enthusiasm.
In the meantime we are toasting and congratulating each other, as last month we received running course descriptions on where to run in Western Sahara (Africa) and Palau (Oceania). With these two new never-before-documented places, Africa is now completed (that is,Run The Planet offers now descriptions on where to run anywhere in this continent, you simply choose your destination!) and Oceania is very close to be completed as well (we are still waiting for suggestions on the Midway Islands and on Wake Island, both military bases). Additionally, we are still missing Syria in Asia, Martinique in Central America and Saint Pierre & Miquelon in North America.
But the historic day is in sight. The largest and most completed running suggestions database is about to have every nation and territory of the whole world represented, for you to pick, pack, travel and run.
Until then, let's not have another achievement go unnoticed.Run The Planet is featuring this month more than 3500 descriptions! Imagine a race with three thousand and five hundred participants, and imagine you being the organizer with pen and paper having to manually list each one of them. Pretty huge task, isn't it?
Well, now you get our point. We usually do not indulge too much in self-celebration, but it is a big thing indeed.
As per the monthly improvements to Run The Planet, let us highlight the addition of a new funny video clip in our Rtp Movie webpage, new marathon courses in our Marathon Mania section, and new photos in our Photo Album.
A comprehensive new article All about hiking poles has been posted in our Hike The Planet section. If you end your walks wishing your knees or whole legs were in better shape you might as well benefit from using poles, as you can lower the amount of stress on them by taking the weight onto the poles through your arms.
Another article worth mentioning is the running guide to Switzerland: a trail runner's paradise. Long known as a top travel destination for hikers, Switzerland is rapidly gaining equal acclaim for its running scene, with races such as the Jungfrau and Davos marathons drawing an international field. If you wouldn't mix the words "fun" and "26.2 miles up a mountain", no worries. The Swiss landscape offers options for every trail runner, including flat city multi-use trails and graded farm-to-farm paths.
Our Rtp Shoes section is featuring this month two new articles: Why defective shoes can hurt you on how running shoes with manufacturer's defects and excessive mileage can physically hurt runners, and ultimately take you away from the sport you love, and an article introducing A self-adjusting running shoe with a sensor and a small computer capable of making five million calculations per second, that works like a human reflex nerve.
Finally, do not miss the latest adventures of Phil the Frog in Texas. He ended up nothing short than driving the Space Shuttle!
To all of you the best wishes for great runs!

WHERE TO RUN IN THE WORLD
Description of the month - Medellín (Colombia)
By J.C. Tripp - I run in Medellín just about every day and love it. The city is framed by mountains, the weather is warm but not too humid, and there are a number of routes available. I prefer to run either on the cycle paths in Suramericana-Laureles area or up to Cerro el Volador which offers a stunning view of the city. Cerro el Volador is one of two hills inside Medellín, the other being Cerro Nutibara, which has paths and a little small scale pueblo at its top. Previously I ran various roads in Poblado and also did some serious mountain running last summer in the Robledo neighborhood (which probably would not be advised). Apart from cars that never stop for pedestrians and the diesel buses that can spew smoke, I have found running here to be pleasant and without problems. The air can be thick sometimes and I have found it best to go in the morning. Also, early afternoon siesta and school dismissals tend to make things clogged at that time.

RUN THE PLANET MAIL
While you were running did you ever have a question? Did you ever have an opinion about something and ask yourself "Is it just me?"? Did you ever come up with a great idea and wonder if you could just tell everyone the world would be a better place? Did you ever have a revelation and want to share it with others? Well now is your chance to address any one of these question, and basically anything else you come up with while you are running. To hear an opinion, or run an idea past someone. Visit the "Rtp Mail" webpage to receive an answer to your running related questions or to read an opinion about your running thoughts. Here are the last three question asked:
•How harmful is it to swallow a bug while running? - Every so often, especially during the Spring or late Summer, while running outside I will accidentally swallow a flying bug! This happens when the insect swarms around my head and I inhale it! Is there anything I can do to avoid this from happening and how harmful is it to swallow a bug? - Bug Biter
•Are there studies on road race cheering? - I have been running road races for several years now, and I have noticed that the quality and enthusiasm of the cheering crowds change from mile to mile. Have any social studies been conducted to explore the phenomenon of road race cheering, and what advice would you give to a crowd of race spectators situated at various locations along the race course? - Cheerleading Cherub
•Why do we need to replace our shoes so often? - Even with all the new technology and research in running shoes, why do the experts still recommend that we replace our shoes every five hundred miles? It seems to me that as the price of shoes increase, their life span should increase as well - Everlasting Shoes

Run, Dad, Run, by Dulcibella Blacket, illustrated by Andy Yelenak, hardcover, 32 pages, Breakaway Books (2004), ISBN: 189136944X
A book on running that active parents can read to their kids (or to grandchildren, or to nieces and nephews). Two children tell all about their running dad - how he runs in the winter and in the summer, through the woods and mountains, on beaches and the streets of their neighborhood. They like to watch as he goes forth each day, and they go to all his road races and cheer him on. They are impressed by their dad's running, and they know it makes him "happy and healthy and strong". But one day, while the family is hiking in the woods and they find an injured rock-climber, the kids see their dad run to the rescue in a heartpounding sequence of action scenes, and save the day. This is a book for all kids, and not just in running households. It shows the health benefits and simple joys of running, pluys a dramatic, heroic use of it. Parents and kids alike will enjoy reading and re-reading this story. "Run, Dad, Run!" celebrates running, glorifying the notion that a little sweat and dedication can bring happiness and strenght, and allow you to be part of the natural world every day. (Plus, you could get to be a hero!). In an age where childhood obesity is rampant and videogames hold children spellbound indoors, the message of "Run, Dad, Run!" should be heard in every home and classroom. A particular note on the illustrations, by Andy Yelenak. Yelenak is renowned for his sports illustrations including the annual posters for the Boston and the New York City marathons, as well as work for numerous magazines. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, including the Society of Illustrators in New York and the U.S. Distance Running Hall of Fame - Click on the cover to order this book at a special price

"Studie van twee voeten" by Albrecht Dürer, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (Netherlands).
Dürer opened his own workshop in 1495 and his vast body of work includes engravings, woodcuts portraits, altarpieces and religious works, paintings, copper engravings and sketches, one of which is the "Studie van twee voeten" ("Study of two feet"; pencil and grey ink, grey washed, white relief on prepared paper; dimensions 17,6 x 21,6 centimeters). Dürer was born in Nürnberg (Germany) on May 21, 1471 as the third son of a Hungarian goldsmith. Painter and graphic artist, Dürer is one of the most outstanding figures in the German Renaissance. Since the beginning he trained in painting, drawing, woodcutting and printing. After traveling to Köln, Venezia, Bologna, and perhaps Firenze and Roma for his studies, he retained influences especially from Italian artist Bellini. Dürer died in Nürnberg on April 6, 1528.

Racing the alligator - There is an old saying that it is hard to remember that your objective was to clear the swamp when you are up to your butt in alligators. For many of us, that same kind of thing can be true as we approach race day. Most of us line up at the starting line up to our butts in alligators. Our training has not been what we wanted, we do not feel as well rested or as well prepared as we would like, and the day is less than perfect. Our minds are filled with the details of all the reasons why we can't be successful. But if you are standing at the starting line, you are already successful. At the very least you have a chance to enjoy being on the course with others who are enjoying the course. Ignore the alligators. Forget about what you wanted and take what you get. In the end, it's all that matters.
