English - Esperanto Running Dictionary

Esperanto: the Universal language - Esperanto was launched by L. L. Zamenhof in 1887 to provide every person on Earth with a second easily learned language. It has a streamlined, totally regular grammar, and takes most of its basic vocabulary from the Latinate, Germanic and Slavic languages. It can be learned thoroughly in a fraction of the time needed to master a national language. After more than a century Esperanto has developed into an autonomous language with tens of thousands of users in all continents, and has a literature bigger than that of many small nations. It is the bridge language of many international marriages, and is used in hundreds of international gatherings every year. But the goals of Esperanto are far more radical: to provide linguistic equality for everyone, and to fight against the vast scale extermination predicted for most of the existing languages. The conscious adoption of Esperanto as the best candidate for the global role would mark a definite step in the maturity of the human race. There are many sources of materials for learning it. One place to start would be lernu.com.

Run The Planet would like to thank Trevor Steele and the Universal Esperanto-Asocio (Nieuwe Binnenweg 176, NL - 3015 BJ Rotterdam, Nederland, phone: + (0)10 436 1044, fax: +(0)10 436 1751, e-mail: direktoro@co.uea.org) for helping to realize this English/Esperanto running dictionary.

Notes about the Esperanto dictionary - Esperanto has 6 letters not used in the plain English alphabet. The letters C, G, H, J, and S, all have a "hat" on them that has the form of the symbol ^. There is a sixth letter, U with an "inverted hat" (it is pronounced like the English W). In the list below we have used the substitutes C^, G^, J^, S^ and U' (there are no examples of H^ in this dictionary).

C with inverse hat  E with inverse hat  R with inverse hat  S with inverse hat  T with inverse hat  U with circle hat  Z with inverse hat

No doubt you are aware how ambiguous many English words are: without the context it is often impossible to give the exact meaning, and the same word made be a verb or a noun or an adjective. Hence in many places we gave alternative renderings. Another point is that Esperanto is far more exact than English; for example, someone who does something professionally is an -isto, while an amateur is an -anto; so a "kuristo" is a professional runner, a "kuranto" does not do it for money.
