El Ocotal is the elite runner's site in Mexico City. It is located on the toll-free road to the city of Toluca, right before the town of Acopilco. Beautiful, high altitude (approx 2500m) forest with two main paths, a 3 Km path and an extended 4 Km path with nice hills. Basically free of Mexico City pollution because of the altitude. I swear you will find yourself forgetting you live or visit the massive city when you unwind on these beautiful trails. On Mondays at 7:30 am you may find yourself running among the best runners in Mexico. I have had the pleasure of running along with German Silva, Benjamin Paredes (6 and 8 in Atlanta Olimpics respectively, German twice winner of New York; Benjamin a close n. 2 finish in 1994), Dionisio Ceron; "London Marathon" legend, Andres Espinosa, Mexican fastes marathon record holder, also a "New York marathon" winner, Martin Mondragon, best master runner in the world today, Maricarmen Diaz, Salvador "Halcon" Garcia, also a New York winner, and two of the worlds best coaches: Rodolfo Gomez, second place in New York a few years ago and mexican olimpic coach, and Tadeus Kepka, former mexican olimpic coach including disciples like Rodolfo Gomez... and who happilly advises amateurs like myself for free. If you visit Mexico, or if you want to do some intensive high altitude training, this is definitely a good choice. It is next to the Desierto De Los Leones National Park, so if you are feeling energetic, you may extend your run up to La Pila or El Pozo for a 35 or 40 Km up and down run.
