My favorite place to run in Mexico is Puerto Escondido because I love the town and I find the air very clear. However, because of the heat, my husband and I generally get up at about 6:00 am and that allows about two hours before the sun starts to heat things up. We generally start near Zigatella beach (world famous for surfers), run on the paths and dirt roads to town then up the hills to the crest of the town back by the airport then downhill back to the beach. That run is about 12 kilometers. To run longer there are several options. We tend to try to avoid the highway because the shoulder is narrow and the traffic is very fast. Wherever we have run in Mexico we have found the locals to be very friendly. In Puerto Escondido we see several Mexicans out running, some of them running barefoot on the sand! Very impressive. Puerto Escondido provides several wonderful stretches of beach for those hardy runners who want to train by running on sand.
