I walked from Kutum in Darfur to Jebel Uri, an abandoned mountain city, 13 years ago. And around Kassala's sugarloaf mountains. But for security reasons (including bandits and landmines) these days you'd better stick to the Nile above Khartoum. Suggest walk: Khartoum to Sabaloka Gorge and Hajar al-Assal(honey rock) about 50km north. Watch out for serious dehydration.
