The city of Papeete, on the bigger part of the island of Tahiti is indeed a little bit caotic to enjoy a nice run: too much traffic. Not far from the center of it, though there is a gorgeous mountain road, all shaded by trees, leading up to the Belvedere look out point. The road goes uphill for few kilometers and then, at the restaurant looking over the city, turns into a path for hikers. From there, should you still have energy to keep moving, you can reach the real "roof" of the island. But beware: there is no drinkable water available, so you better carry a bottle with you along your run or walk.
