Freiburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany (or anywhere in Europe). It is located in the on the edge of the Black Forest near the Rhine River. The city is about 30 minutes north of Switzerland and 30 minutes east of France. One of the best places to run is right out the door of the youth hostel (Jugendherberge) on the Dreisam River. There is a trail that stretches for five kilometers to the east (towards the Black forest) and 10 kilometers to the west (the Rhine). I recommend running to the east and then making a loop back on the other side of the river (there are trails on both sides). When you get back to the youth hostel, you should consider heading up in to the hills behind it until you come to trails that are running east-west on the side of the mountains; this will mean you can run as far as you want (endless kilometers) into the Black Forest if you head east. Explore these trails and then drop back into the valley to get back to the hostel or to the riverside trail that takes you back into town. Main running trails: Dreisam River Trails (one on both side), Gunterstal Trails (a valley south of town), Mooswald Trails (on the west edge of town), Schlossberg/St. Ottilien (up in the hills above the youth hostel). Main tracks: Post Jahn (on the Dreisam to the east), University Track (at the sports institute). It is a great town for running and hosts both great road races as well as track meets and hill running races (serious hills). Enjoy!
