The South Shore Road South East of the historic town of Christiansted was recently paved and gives about a 16 mile scenic run. The North Shore Road from historic Salt River (where the first encounter between Europeans and the "new world", also called Columbus landing) is the route used for the First Marathon of the Century on January 1, 2001; on a clear day you can see St. Thomas and British Virgin Islands. Go up to the top from Salt River and climb about a thousand feet to Scenic Road which takes you about 12 miles west and down to the coast into the historic town of Frederiksted, where the emancipation of slaves in the Danish West Indies took place.
