St Andrews is best known in running circles for the opening scene of "Chariots of Fire", where 1924 Olympians are seen running along the West Sands (supposed to be Broadstairs, Kent, in the film!), graded 2001 as one of Europe's cleanest beaches. The West Sands are about 3km long - from town to river Eden - before you meet soft sand and are advised to run in the dunes, then fringe the golf courses (which are publicly owned, but be careful - golfers have priority) and return to town via the old railway, now partially a cycle path next to the A91 main road. One circuit there is about 5-6 miles.
