Shippan Point: the neighborhood roads of the Shippan Point area of Stamford are ideal for running. Shippan is a peninsula that juts into Long Island Sound in the southernmost part of Stamford. The roads are generally quiet with light traffic, rolling hills, ocean views, and some great houses to look at. For a nice 3.5-mile run, start at the mouth of Shippan Avenue at West Beach. Head towards the Point with a long gentle incline. A sidewalk on the East Side of the road is available, but generally Shippan Avenue is wide enough to allow you to run on the more even road. As the hill begins to slope back downwards, take a right onto Ocean Drive West. You’ll be greeted by a welcome long downhill stretch. Check out the Yacht Club’s tennis courts and harbor on your right at the bottom of the hill. Now the houses start to get really interesting. Continue to follow Ocean Drive West around towards the point. At several places you’ll be able to see the Sound and the ships in the harbor, as well as the rows of magnificent houses and gardens. This part of the run is generally flat, with some mild inclines. Where Ocean Drive West and Shippan Avenue meet again, you have reached the Point! Directly across Shippan Avenue the run picks up again on Ocean Drive East, but for a spectacular view of the ocean, take a 100-yard detour to the right and take in Long Island Sound. Continue on Ocean Drive East for more of the same, big houses, glimpses of water. Towards the end of Ocean Drive East you’ll encounter your only major hill. At the end, take a right back on to Shippan Avenue and enjoy the gentle slope back down to the start. To add distance to this run, take a loop around Saddle Rock Road (on your right off Ocean Drive West) and Sea Beach Drive (on your right off Ocean Drive East).
