Running in the Cove: Cove Island Park provides Stamford runners with one of the few places to run closed to vehicular traffic. This makes it a pretty popular place, especially in the summer. And although it’s not that large, it can be ideal for short runs or as a starting/ending point for longer runs in and around the Cove neighborhood. One of my favorite runs: start in Cove Island Park and head out up Cove Road. You’ll start with this big hill, but it will be the only one of the run, so don’t worry too much. At the top of the hill at the light, make a right onto Seaside Avenue. A nice sidewalk makes for safe running on this pretty but busy access road to I-95. At the end of Seaside (you’ve gone about a mile now), take a right onto Route 1. This sharp downhill takes you past the World Wrestling Federation headquarters. At the bottom of the hill make a right onto Weed Street. This is one of the best stretches of running in Stamford - a mile of flat ocean view (spectacular for sunrises every morning). The one downside to this stretch is there is no sidewalk, so you’ll have to be extra careful when running on Weed. At the end of Weed Street you’ve arrived back at Cove Island Park. With Long Island Sound all around you this truly is a special place to run. Make as many loops around the park as necessary to get the desired distance you require.
