Run around the medieval walls! Wherever your hotel is, walk towards the Plaza del Mercado Grande, that arcade-surrounded square central in the city (the biggest of the two, facing the arch). It is a classical distance for Spain, called legua. One "legua" is a bit more than 5k. Start running from the square heading south (taxi station). Nice view of mountains, all straight the walls (they will always remain at our right handside), flat until a cobblestoned downhill zig-zag. Keep your right, you are down in the river. Stay in the right side of the road (narrow point here) and watch out traffic! Start climbing for the second half of the lap. If winter, try to run along the snow, very tough indeed, up to the square where you started. And all this at 1120 metres above sea level! Ask local runners for other routes or contact me if you are on holiday in Avila.
