Generally, Niamey is an awesome city to walk around, smelling the smells, taking in the neighborhoods, etcetera. Just stay away from the touristy areas(near the river and the major hotels, the Grand Marche and the Petit Marche) if safety is a concern. The area around the Niamey bridge is one of the most dangerous places in the whole country. Niger, like most West African countries, does not have a running culture, so care should be taken in choosing routes.
