In 1996 in the small city of Sibu, in Sarawak province of East Malaysia, the favourite spot to run was the "Padang" in downtown Sibu. From the Garden Hotel, the padang or stadium is just a short distance, about one mile away. The Padang is an 8-track stadium with grandstand, washrooms, and other exercise facilities. The residents of Sibu, young and old gather at the stadium each day after their work day to walk, run, racewalk, play field hockey, play soccer, do track & field events, or just hang out. The padded track provides an ideal surface for running laps and meeting up with other runners. Most early evenings attract some 200+ participants, during various forms of activities. By 6 pm, at the sound of the nearby mosque and the call to prayer, the Padang empties as darkness sets in. The warm Malaysian air cools and the track becomes your personal and most pleasant training ground. In 1997, the Padang was scheduled for demolition and rebuild in a new location near the Sibu International Airport. Reaching the Padang now becomes a bit more difficult, but having experienced the warmth of the Malaysian runners and the friendship of the Sarawak Marathon Club, it would be indeed very easy to organize a ride to this new and better "Padang". Enjoy running in Sibu.
