You can run as far as you want, free from traffic or hills, along the Union Canal. There are many places to join the canal, the most central is where Gilmore Park crosses the canal. Turn west off Lothian Road onto Fountainbridge, then take the first small road to the south, which is Gilmore Park. The towpath continues all the way past Falkirk, about 40 miles away, and you could continue on to Glasgow. For a reasonable long run, you might go 12 kilometers or 7.5 miles to Ratho, where the Bridge Inn serves food and drink (you will see their restaurant barge!) - I have no financial interest! The Union Canal had several gaps, which were joined up for the Millennium. Now the towpath is continuous, with no navigation problems, and a good running surface.
