For a long run, near Funchal (Madeira), take the No. 6 bus to Encumeada, at 1007 meters altitude. Run west along EN110, this climbs only 500 meters in 6 kilometers, then is nearly level for 10 kilometers and then descends slowly. This road is not busy, and passes through open country with great views on a clear day. There are several options to get back down to the main coast road, turning left: the EN209 at 12.5 km, the Calheta road, at 18 km, or the Prazeres road at 23.5 km. The length of each is difficult to estimate due to hairpins, but is around 5 kilometers long and 800 meters down. Each leads to the No. 107 or No. 142 bus route.
