Biggest enemy is the weather, requiring some months to acclimatise to the high tempurature and humidity, and the crime rate which deters running after dark. Maputo was one of the most scenic cities in Africa and notwithstanding the fact that it is very run down, still offers some reasonable opportunities. The marginal is the most popular area, for good reasons. It is a 12 km stretch of road running along the seafront with palm tree protection. Some good short sharp hills run up from here into the residential area. Running in the main city itself not advised for security reasons. One organised half marathon per year in September/October time.
