Of course, there is the "Leiden Marathon", a perfectly organized event taking place in June every year. But there is more to running in and around Leiden. For tourists a run along the canals may be the way to go. East of the city the "polders" are my favorite with the green meadows, the dikes and windmills. Yet there is nothing like running through the dunes and along the wide sandy beach just 6 miles west of Leiden. Leiden, a beautiful old university city, is located approximately 20 miles south of Amsterdam and can easily be reached by car or rail.
