One of my favorite running routes takes me (and one of my children for company) from my front door and down "Snake Road", a long winding road with only a few cars. This portion of the run is quiet and calm, with beautiful greenery and nice fragrant floral trees and bamboo on both sides of the road. Once we reach the main highway, Marine Drive, the run becomes busy with traffic. A runner must be alert in this area because a portion of this run will actually be quite close to the highway. The run will continue through the capital city of Hagatna, past the federal courthouse and many historical buildings and parks. We run past the Boat Basin and a historical bridge before moving down to more modern commercial areas. When we reach the Bank of Hawaii building, we turn and work our way to San Ramon Hill, a very steep hill that I still have yet to conquer. My hardest workout and most of my sweat comes from walking up this hill. When we finally reach the top of the hill, at the entrance to the Government House, we can catch our breath. From there, it is smooth sailing - or should I say "running"? - back home. Total distance: about 4 miles. Warning: "Snake Road" has no streetlights and can be a very dangerous and scary place to be in the dark. This run is recommended for early evening, before dusk.
