The Pipeline Track, Fern Tree. On the slopes of Mt. Wellington in Hobart, winds its way around the contours of the mountain and follows the path of one of the main early Hobart water supply pipelines. It is a lovely gravel track through temperate rainforest that is always sheltered from the wind (which can be an issue in Hobart). If you leave from the car park of the Fern Tree Tavern the track is 13 kilometers one way, so a good 26 kilometers return and kilometers are marked. It has the huge bonus of having a very gradual incline on the way out and a similar gradual downhill on the way back (just when your legs appreciate it). You can shorten or lengthen your run to suit your mood by using any of the many other tracks that work their way over the mountain slopes. There is a great shop next to the Tavern that serves hot chocolate, muffins and other drinks that is always open early on a Sunday morning for the groups of runners who leave at 8:30 am. Anyone turning up is sure to find someone to have a run with most weeks.
