A view from a visitor: I stayed at the China Hotel by Marriott, on the north side of the city. There is a nice park (Yuekiushan I think) immediately outside the hotel... look for the hilly forest. It is very hilly, has a few lakes, and wide roads for walkers, runners, and martial arts. You should manage to run a few miles without retracing your steps too much. The gates to the park were open around 8 am, but you have to pay a small fee to enter during regular day-time hours (9-6 pm I think). I assume they leave it free for commuters in the morning. The fee is small (about 1-2 U.S. dollars in local Yuan Renminbi currency), but annoying if you happen to be out on a run without money! In the morning it is quite crowded, but there is still plenty of room to run at a steady pace.
