Urique to Batopilas: begin the run in the town plaza of Urique, located at the bottom of the 6,000 foot deep Urique canyon. Run down the river on dirt road for 5 miles before crossing the river and running trails that climb about 1,000 feet to the settlement known as Los Alisos (The Alders). After Los Alisos the trail climbs about 3,000 feet in a couple of miles. Nobody will be running this stretch of trail! After this steep, beautiful climb, you will reach the rim of the Urique canyon with stunning back-views before beginning a 6 mile rolling mountain crossing on single track trail through oak trees and pine forests before reaching the overlook of the Batopilas canyon. You will be glad to see that you are about to run downhill. It will not be long before you will wish that you were climbing again! This is a very knarley, steep descent. Do not try to run this descent! This is a trot at best. After this long, rocky descent into the Batopilas canyon, you will reach the village of Cerro Colorado. This is where the run to the finish begins: rolling 7 miles along the river to the bridge that marks the entrance to the old mining town of Batopilas. From the bridge, it is one long mile through the narrow street of Batopilas to the town plaza. You are there! Drink cerveza, eat and relax. Bienvenidos a Batopilas!
