Another great option to run along the Estrecho de Magallanes (Magellan Strait) is on the East side of the town. Start from Avenida Independencia, right in front of the monumental clock of Puerto Prat (Prat harbor) and head west, away from downtown Punta Arenas, along the coast. The street will soon merge into Calle 21 de Mayo with an open view of the strait. This coastal road is dedicated to the Combate Naval de Iquique, the naval battle held on May 21, 1879, where captain Arturo Prat Chacón defeated the Peruvian fleet (Chile, Peru and Bolivia were involved in the Guerra del Pacifico between 1879 and 1883) and May 21 is a national holiday for chileans. Follow Calle 21 de Mayo on the wide sidewalk for a couple of kilometers, untill you find on your right the Maria Behety park and on your left the remains of the Lord Lonsdale vessel. At this point you can head back (the sidewalk ends) or continue, with caution, along the side of the road to the rural part of Punta Arenas, adding as many kilometers as you like.
