In the south of Essen lies a wonderful area for running around the small lake called Baldeneye See. One nice well marked course starts at the parking lot on Frankenstrasse, and nice 4 kilometers loop. It is a well marked trail, and there are almost always people around if safety is a concern. From this starting point you can also continue to make the course 12 kilometers by going around and behind the Villa Hugel to the right. For hill work the Isenburglauf is for you. It is only 7.1 kilometers, but has 210 meter in elevation change. If you do not mind running on asphalt and want to avoid hills, head to the Baldeneye See itself and you can run the perimeter of the lake (14.2 kilometers). For maps to these runs go to the website www.laufen-in-essen.de and click on Laufstrecken (running trails).
