Bernal Heights. Running around the top of this hill gives you fabulous views of San Francisco downtown (absolutely beautiful), the San Francisco Bay, across to Oakland, and of residential neighborhoods to the west and the south. At the same time, you get an excellent run with moderately challenging hill climbs. Each round is very close to a mile. In the cool category it rates an A+ with dogs that don't attack you and friendly neighborhood people. Gates block one side of the hill from traffic and the other half has very good visibility of oncoming traffic and crossings, from both directions. It is a relatively unknown pleasure and extremely local, which also increases the cool quotient. It can be refreshingly windy at times and the views at sunrise, sunset and on cloudless nights can be spectacular. Water fountain (not always working), easy parking, no toilets.
