Burundi's capital Bujumbura (formerly known as Usumbura) is located on a mountainside on the northeast side of the Tanganyika lake. A vast range of mountains can be admired on the other side of the lake (in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). There are wide sprawling boulevards lined with old colonial buildings but jogging is not really recommended, as street crimes are common and pose a high risk for travellers. In particular avoid walking or running alone on the public streets bordering Lake Tanganika. The major hotels often have fitness facilities, so keeping up with your training schedule is not a problem. Please note that the Government of Burundi maintains a curfew for Bujumbura from 11 at night to 5 in the morning. Stay indoors after dark, if you are unescorted, or move around only in groups.
