One of my favourite runs near Neath is around Afan Argoed. This is about 4 miles from Neath Town Centre and extends up the Afan Valley. Afan Argoed means the woody place and the locals call this area "Little Switzerland". There is a variety of runs around here, my favourite route is along the old railway line. A full circuit from Pontryhdyfen to Cymmer and back via Glyncorrwg is about 10 miles but there is a shortcut across the valley which cuts this into two smaller runs of 7 miles and 3 miles. There is parking in Pontrhydyfen or at the Afan Argoed visitor centre (which has an attendant and costs £2 for the day). The area is popular with mountain bikers as well. Be warned: if you start in Pontryhdyfen it is up a long gradient for the first half of the course!
