Another option in Mafinga is to run east or West along the Morogoro/Mbeya highway. I have not had any problems with running on the shoulder, and the road is well paved and not busy. Run on the right side of the road to face oncoming traffic. Both directions have lots of hills, but the west has larger hills and eventually some large wetlands flanked by plantations of pine trees, but you will want to bring toilet paper and water, as the first "town" you come across is not for 20+ miles. To the east, however, there are always small shops that sell water, and lots of African style toilets, just remember to bring toilet paper. If you run far enough east (about 82 kilometers) you will reach Iringa, which is listed in most guide books. Also, if at any time you become exhausted you can always jump onto the small buses that pass every 5 minutes and will take you either to Iringa or back to Mafinga.
