The island of Diego Garcia is a living coral atol, once an active volcano. It is not very big, only about 36 miles from one tip of its unique horseshoe shape to the other. We only use about a third of it anyway, the rest is protected wildlife habitat. The undeveloped areas are covered in thick jungle with off road biking and running trails running through them. There is a paved running path that is marked every quarter mile for several miles and there are lots of trails but you run the risk of tripping over coconuts or coconut crabs the size of footballs. I stick to the pavement for the most part. The paved course begins at the Base Gym and runs along Diego Garcia's lone highway for about five miles. After that runners have to share the miles with cyclists and vehicles on Diego Garcia's lone highway. After a tough run the cool lagoon water is always close by for a quick dip to cool off overworked muscles. It is great therapy.
