Watersportbaan - Blaarmeersen. The best known running spot in Ghent is the Watersportbaan, a straight stretch of water of about 2,000 meters used for rowing races and regattas. The loop around is close to 5 kilometers long and it is hard to go for a run there without meeting other runners at any moment of the day. Your run can get a little boring as there is little change in the scenery, but the advantage is that you are away from traffic and hence safe. From the Watersportbaan - about halfway down the stretch - you can directly access the Blaarmeersen recreational park. You will find the entrance next to the Topsporthall Vlaanderen, an indoor sports hall which is clearly visible from the Watersportbaan loop. The Blaarmeersen consists of sports facilities and recreational areas embedded in a green surrounding, so it is easy to chart out a (big) loop and totally forget you are in a city environment. I can particularly recommend the surge up and down the ski hill to spice up your run.
