I stayed in Beijing at the Sheraton Hotel (August 2004). Across the main street (3rd Ring Road) there is an embassy area crossed by several streets closed to general traffic, but open to pedestrians (and runners). The whole area is very quiet and there is only local traffic (virtually none at 7:00 am). Most streets are lined with trees on both sides and there is very few people walking the streets – a near impossibility in most of China's cities. The area, Sanlitun Lu, near the canal, is also easily accessible from others hotels such as Kunlun, Kempinsky and Hilton.
