I visited Aberdeen in Scotland, and have a route recommendation: the Old Deeside Line, a 6 mile ex railway path from the lovely (and very runnable) Duthie Park in the city out to Peterculter. Surroundings vary from suburban back yards to more rural stretches, with some great views. It is flat, well-used and impossible to get lost! Easily accessible to visitors staying in one of the great many B&Bs on the Great Western Road, too.
