A very nice run starts at the Scheldebrug (a bridge across the river Schelde) in Gentbrugge (one of the boroughs of Gent), located between the Gentbruggestraat and the Edmond Blockstraat. From the center of town you can reach the bridge with trolleybus 3. On the bridge you can choose whether to start running on the left or the right bank of the river. My guess is the left bank is the better choice as it is the only short bit (about 500 meters) with traffic (nothing heavy though) before you reach the pedestrian (and cycles) walkway. You could use it as a warm up walk. The idea is to run all the way to the next bridge (in Heusden; 5,5 kilometers), crossing it and running back on the opposite bank, which is free from traffic all the way. All together an 11 kilometers run with meadows on one side and the river on the right (though this river is almost waterless 3/4 of the time). The surface is tarmac (unless you try running on the side of it) and two short bits of cobblestones near the bridges. No restrooms or waterfountains.
