For a nice way to run in Rethymnon (Crete), you can go to the stadium of Gallos. It is located 3 kilometers outside of Rethymnon. To get there the preferred way is by taxi or a lift. The traffic on the street is heavy and dangerous, so it is wise to get a taxi to the stadium. Little chance that you can get a taxi back from there, but you can run/walk/jog downhill to the city limit from where you can get a taxi back to where you stay. Less preferred way: you can run uphill (about 2.5 kilometers) from the city limit, but be warned: it is quite a steep run, and a real calve-killer. We did this once. We are not going to do this again. The stadium (www.stadia.gr/rethymno/rethymno.html) is free for use to any athlete. Its gate is open during weekdays from 10 am till 8 pm. When the gate is closed, just climb over it. We did this too, as we saw locals do so, and they told us that this was just fine. On the last Saturday we were there, we climbed over the gate, and a little while later the care-taker came to water the grass of the soccer field. He was very friendly. :-) The track is good (8 lanes). It is a bit soft, like there is some kind of carpet on it.
