Considering it is the capital of a developing country, Phnom Penh is quite a nice city to run in. The main boulevards are fairly wide and the traffic is not too bad early in the morning. Here is my favorite run - maybe 8 kilometers out and back. Start at Independence Monument (near Hun Sen park), run east along Sihanouk Boulevard through the park toward the riverside. When you hit the first major cross street (Samdech Sothearos), turn left. You will see the Royal Palace dead ahead. At the Palace, turn right to reach the riverside. Head north along the river until you reach loading dock for the boat to Siem Reap. Then, make a left and you will hit Wat Phnom. If you want to do some hill running (stairs), this is the only place in the city with any altitude (but watch out for the monkeys). Circle Wat Phnom and you will hit the new U.S. Embassy. Make a right at the embassy and run to the end of the road by the National University of Management. Turn back when you hit Monivong Boulevard (Raffles Le Royale Hotel) and follow the same path home. Beware of errant badminton birdies!
