Before I arrived in Banda Aceh, I was really concerned about the appropriateness of running in a conservative Muslim society where women cover their heads in public. As a woman, I was concerned that I would be hassled and yelled at for the duration of any run I attemped. Surprisingly, I have found that running on the rural roads outside of town has been an incredibly pleasant experience. The local citizens are quick to say hello and are, for the most part, very friendly. I recommend running on the roads to Mataie, the recreation complex near the military center, as these roads are quiet in the morning and offer stunning scenery and gorgeous sunrises. On occasion, I have seen monkeys in the trees - and even spotted a wild boar one morning!
