One of the best running trails in north Phoenix is to found at the Reach 11 Recreational Area. Reach 11 hugs the north side of the Central Arizona Project canal between Cave Creek Road and Scottsdale Road. Unlike most of Phoenix, you will find wide rock-free trails with lots of vegatation (for Phoenix) along the main trail. The park is divided in half by Tatum Boulevard. Round trip from Tatum to Cave Creek is just over 8 miles and the round trip from Tatum to Scottsdale is just under 8 miles. To find the trail head, drive north on Tatum from Union Hills and cross the CAP Canal, the parking lot for the eastern section is on Tatum about 200 yards north of the canal. The parking lot for the western section is via the road to Horse Lovers Park, on the left about 100 yards north of the canal. You can also approach the park from the 101 freeway. Exit Tatum and drive one mile south to the canal. The park has more than 20 miles of trails, but the main trail that runs along the south side of the park is the best. You will easily forget that you are in Phoenix.
