Running in downtown Cairo or most areas of the city is not advisable after 6:30 am. The best time to end a run seems to be around 6:00 am. That means waking up pretty early. In Maadi it is possible to run the back streets until about 7:00 am on weekdays and 8:00 am on Fridays. The air in Maadi is much cleaner than in the city or in Zamalek. A good run for very early on Fridays is from the Semi Rames Hotel along the Corniche to Maadi. This is about 15 kilometers and some nice views of the Nile and old Cairo are along the way. I would not advise running along the Corniche after 7:00 am on any day. The best places to run in Egypt are in Luxor and at the beachy places like Abu Sultan. You can find clean air, little traffic and some interesting sights of the Egyptian countryside. Running in the desert sands near the pyramids is interesting and challenging. Do not believe all of the media hype about Egypt. I have been running here for years and the closest thing I have seen to any threatening behavior has been the sopoforic barks of the baladi dogs.
