If you ever have a chance to run in Kenya, try this: some years ago I studied malaria in Magadi, a village in the southern part of Kenya, a couple hours drive south of Nairobi towards the Tanzanian border. The village is dominated by the winning of soda from Lake Magadi; most of the lake consists of dry (soda) salts; a beautiful sight especially with the abundant flamingoes. Run south from the village along the dust road towards Tanzania. You may pass some Maasai along the way or you may not see anybody at all. Enjoy the dry hills and the view of the lake on your right. However, do not go too far. After about 6 miles I would usually see the baboons, playing and running not too far from the track. Even though they are usually not aggressive, I never approached them too close and wouldn't advise it. Since you are in the middle of the Rift Valley and right on the Equator it is usually hot. So go early in the morning and do not run a marathon. Even though it has been a few years back and I haven't been back in Africa yet, I often think about running along Lake Magadi and hope to do it again; it's just magic!
