The best place is slightly north of town (off of I-91 North) at Sleeping Giant State Park (from a distance the shape of the hills resemble a man lying face up). There are numerous trails, some well graded, others are strenuous, rocky hikes. Quite a few are nice for running, including a gravel road (no vehicles allowed) up to a stone tower with nice views. Trail maps are in a box near the entrance.
