From the intersection of Whitney & Ives/Dickerman, in the Mt Carmel section of Hamden, head east on Ives. Go across the bridge over Mill River and bear left, continuing on Ives. After almost a mile, turn left onto Brewster Lane - designated a Hamden Scenic Route. It's especially beautiful in the fall, when the maple and poplar leaves are a perfect gold. It's also got a couple of great hills. Brewster comes out on Mt Carmel Avenue by Q'piac College & near Sleeping Giant Park. Go left on Mt Carmel & take the next left on New Street to circle back to Ives. This route features a small fishing lake with swans. Or go left on Mt Carmel & head into Sleeping Giant State Park. Or go left on Mt Carmel to Whitney & connect with the Farmington Canal trail. Or, for more hills, go right on Mt Carmel, then right again on Ridge Road. Ridge Road will take you back to the upper end of Ives. This is my favorite part - it's mostly downhill back to the starting point.
