The Forbidden Drive in the Wissahickon Creek park is nature's gift to runners. No cars in the park just runners, bikers, walkers, and horse back riders sharing 10 miles of dirt/gravel road and endless miles of trails. It is almost unreal for a large city. The park can be driven to for shorter runs (76 to Lincoln Drive) but can also be part of a longer run from downtown Philly. Take the paved Kelly Drive (along the banks of the Schyukill) past the Falls bridge until it ends at Ridge Avenue and turn left onto Ridge (approximately 5 miles from the art museum). Cross the street at the light and enter the thin paved path. This will take you right to the start of the Forbidden drive at Lincoln drive (about another mile). Then you can add on as many miles as you want. It is pretty easy to train for a marathon in Philly. You can also run from the art museum to Valley Forge park (21 miles) by staying on Ridge ave until you hit Manayunk and get on the canal path there.
